Maasai women are leading a quiet revolution against Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) in Loita Kenya, transforming from subjects of a deep-rooted cultural tradition into key agents of change. Through community-led advocacy, alternative rites of passage, and economic empowerment, they are actively protecting their daughters and challenging patriarchal norms to eliminate this practice.

• Alternative Rites of Passage (ARP):This is a critical community-driven approach where traditional ceremonies and teachings about womanhood are retained, but the physical “cut” is removed. Girls are educated on their rights and the health risks of FGM, and they receive training on sexual and reproductive health.
• “Cut the Garment, Not the Girl” Campaigns:Initiatives like those led by Oltoilo Le Maa CBO Community Concerns in Narok, Kenya, work with former “cutters”—the traditional women performing FGM—to turn them into advocates against it. These reformed cutters are trained in alternative livelihoods such as tailoring, beaded jewelry, and dairy farming.
• Rescue Centers and Safe Houses:Women activists run safe houses where girls fleeing FGM and child marriage can seek refuge and continue their education.
• Engaging Men and Elders:Maasai women, along with partners like Amref Health Africa, engage the Council of Elders and younger Maasai warriors (morans) to publicly renounce FGM and support the marriage of uncut girls.
